Why Textanz and how it works
Word and phrase frequency is a commonly discussed problem today, and many software vendors are offering online and offline solutions for that. We are continuously monitoring this market and would like to emphasize the following benefits of Textanz:
- Many kinds of frequencies.
Besides individual words, Textanz is able to calculate frequencies of phrases and wordforms. Our program evaluates phrases irrespective of punctuation marks or spacing. Because of this, identical word successions are evaluated like identical phrases, regardless of linefeeds or various comma locations.
By wordform we mean any consequent characters in word - from single character to whole word. This mode is advisable to advanced users of Textanz and allows to detect frequently used word even when it turns to various forms in text, e.g. differs in suffix and/or prefix.
- Powerful text extraction capabilities.
Using Apache Tika suite of parsers, Textanz is able to extract text from all well-known document formats such as RTF, MS Office, Open Office, HTML, XML, PDF and more. The full list of supported formats can be seen on Apache Tika project website. It is possible to pass file from local filesystem to Textanz, as well as provide the URL to download web-page and extract text.
- Frequency calculation over multiple documents.
You can open several text tabs and load documents from various sources : local disk, network, web-page, clipboard. Textanz will then calculate word and phrase frequencies for all texts. This is useful, for example, if you need to perform a batch processing and find the cases of cross-qouting between two or more documents.
- Various result presentation.
After scanning the text, Textanz gives you results in the form of sorted list. You can perform bi-directional sorting by any column (lexem, length, frequency) and filtering. Also it is possible to highlight all occurrences of word or phrase in original text, for single- or multiline selection.
- Plaform-independent, wide charset support.
Textanz 3.x is written in Java and can be run on any OS that supports JVM 1.6+. Unicode encoding allows to analyse text in any language.
Safety
Textanz is not an editing program and will not change your original document in any way. You can load text from file or clipboard, perform frequency analysis, then edit text in your favorite word processor and repeat the procedure as needed. Use and enjoy Textanz with the certainty that there is absolutely no risk to your documents or document formatting from using this exceptional analysis tool, one you will quickly come to depend on to improve all of your written work.
